The ?kohekohe (Palmeria dolei) of the Hawaiian honey creeper subfamily is endemic to the island of Maui. Its natural habitat are wet forests dominated by koa on the windward side of Haleakal? at elevations up to 7,100 feet. Most recognized about this bird is its whitish gold feather crest on its head. Thought to be extinct in 1945, small populations were discovered and through conservation efforts estimates of up to 3800 birds now exist under Federal protection.
