The Mauritius Fody (foudia rubra) is endemic to the island of Mauritius and classified as now critically endangered, having a current estimated population of less than 250. Threats include loss of habitat due to introduced predators. Breeding males feature a highly distinctive bright red head, neck and breast with wings and tails streaked in pale brown. To boost its numbers, conservation efforts are focused on breeding on nearby islands free from Norway Rats, a non-native predator.
